Manipur observes Gandhi Jayanti with cleanliness drive

Imphal, Oct 2 (UNI) The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was observed as National Cleanliness Day/Swachh Bharat Diwas at Gandhi Memorial Hall, Imphal, with Governor of Manipur Ajay Kumar Bhalla leading the celebrations. The Governor, along with the Speaker of the Manipur Assembly, former Chief Minister, MLAs, Chief Secretary, DGP, senior civil and police officials and members of the public, offered floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. Addressing the gathering, the Governor highlighted Gandhi's enduring values of truth, non-violence and self-reliance, stressing that these principles remain as relevant today as during the freedom struggle. He underlined that Gandhiji's idea of self-reliance inspires people to take responsibility for personal growth and societal progress. Lauding the Swachh Bharat Mission, the Governor said Manipur has made notable progress in sanitation and waste management, with local bodies playing a key role. He added that the state's achievements in the mission have been acknowledged at the national level, reflecting the collective commitment of citizens, local authorities and the state government towards creating cleaner surroundings and healthier living conditions. The Governor noted that initiatives like Make in India are opening new opportunities for the youth of Manipur, with indigenous products and handlooms gaining recognition and creating livelihoods. He urged citizens to adopt cleanliness as a way of life rather than just a civic responsibility and to work together for a cleaner, healthier and more prosperous Manipur. The observance featured a soulful opening rendition by artistes of Shri Shri BalMukanda Dev Musical College and a captivating dance choreography of 'Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram' performed by the Government Dance College.
